Most visitors to Farafra Oasis go there to see the White Desert, el-Sahara el-Beida, the area to the north-east of Qasr el-Farafra which is renowned for its spectacular scenery. The chalk-white landscape is strewn with alien shapes, boulders of brilliant white which thrust up from the surface of the desert, intensified by the clear light of noon, shimmering gold at sunset or blackened and shrunken in a cloud-filled sky.

The second season’s excavations (in 2000) revealed another seven tombs and 103 mummies. As well as the beautifully decorated masks and coffins, wooden panels or stelae were found, some in the shape of a temple and decorated with depictions of Osiris, Anubis and Horus, traditional funerary deities. In the 2001 season a further three tombs were uncovered, containing 22 mummies, bringing the total to 233 burials. The richest burial so far was discovered in Tomb 54, in which the mummy wore a golden mask with a uraeus, the spitting cobra, a symbol of royalty, which Dr Hawass suggests, probably indicates the desire of the deceased to have a kingly transfiguration in the afterlife.
Day 1
Leave from Cairo in the morning to arrive in Bahariya at lunchtime to have lunch at the Golden Valley Hotel. After lunch we start our trip towards the cave. The first night is spent in the desert before the cave, and you will be served a BBQ dinner before falling asleep under the stars
Day 2
After breakfast we continue to the cave for a day of exploration inside and outside the cave. The night is spent at the cave in a camp under the stars.
Day 3
From the cave we move to the White Desert to see all the amazing limestone formations shaped into fantasy figures such as rabbit, horse, mushroom, etc. The night is spent in a camp in the White Desert.
Day 4
After breakfast moving from White Desert via Crystal Mountain and the small Bedouin village El Haez back to the Golden Valley Hotel for lunch and return trip to Cairo.
